Special Election
A Special Election is any election that is not regularly scheduled. A special election may be held for any purpose authorized or required by law; often to fill a vacancy or for a public measure.

Voter Registration
Pre-Registrationdeadline for voter registration closes at 5:00pm Monday, February 20. Persons wishing to participate in this election who register to vote after February 20 will be required to provide proof of identification (i.e. current and valid photo identification card with an expiration date), AND proof of residency in their voting precinct, when they go to the polls on election day, or when they request an absentee ballot in-person. Other provisions may also apply. Persons not registered to vote by February 20, should expect a longer processing time at the polls on election day.
Absentee Ballots
Absentee Ballots will be available beginning Wednesday, February 15, for mail and in person voting. Download theabsentee ballot request form here.
The Election Office can begin accepting Request Forms now.
The first day of in-person absentee voting and the first day the Election Office can mail ballots is Wednesday, February 15.
The last day an absentee ballot may be mailed to a voter for this election is Monday, February 20.
In-person absentee voting at the courthouse closes at 4:30pm on Monday, March 6.
Requests for absentee ballots must be in writing and should be mailed or delivered to: Black Hawk County Elections, 316 E. 5th Street, Waterloo Iowa 50703
Extended Hours
Extended hours are available for voter registration and absentee voting in the Black Hawk County Election Office. In addition to regular hours of Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, extended office hours will be as follows:
Monday, February 20 - 8am to 5pm
Friday, March 3 - 8am to 5pm

Important Dates
Friday, January 6 - The first day candidates can file for Waterloo Ward 4 City Council Vacancy.
Friday, February 10 - 5pm - The filing deadline for Waterloo Ward 4 City Council Vacancy.
Monday, February 13 - 12pm - The objection deadline for Waterloo Ward 4 City Council Vacancy.
Monday, February 13 - 5pm - The withdrawal deadline for Waterloo Ward 4 City Council Vacancy.
Wednesday, February 15 - The first day to mail ballots, and first day for in person voting.
Monday, February 20 - 5pm - The deadline to submit a written request for an absentee ballot, and pre-registration deadline.
Monday, March 6 - 4:30pm - The last day to vote in person at the Election Office.
Tuesday, March 7: Election Day; Polls and Election Office open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Election Day, voters must vote at their polling location.
