City Runoff Elections are mandated by the corresponding city ordinance when no candidate in a municipal election attains a majority of the votes cast. The top two candidates proceed to a Runoff Election four weeks later, and the winner of the runoff is declared the elected candidate.
The polls will be open from 7:00am to 8:00pm. The full list can be found below.
Voter Registration
Pre-Registrationdeadline for voter registration closes at 5:00pm Monday, November 20. Persons wishing to participate in this election who register to vote after November 20 will be required to provide proof of identification (i.e. current and valid photo identification card with an expiration date), AND proof of residency in their voting precinct, when they go to the polls on election day, or when they request an absentee ballot in-person. Other provisions may also apply. Persons not registered to vote by November 20, should expect a longer processing time at the polls on election day. More Information on Registering to Vote
Absentee Ballots
Absentee Ballots are available now for in-person voting and voting by mail!
The deadline to submit a request to have an absentee ballot via mail is 5pm on Monday, November 20.
Requests for absentee ballots must be in writing and should be mailed or delivered to: Black Hawk County Elections, 316 E. 5th Street, Waterloo Iowa 50703
The first day of in-person absentee voting and the first day the Election Office will mail ballots is Friday, November 17.
In-person absentee voting at the courthouse closes at 4:30pm on Monday, December 4. Please note that the Election Office will be closed November 23rd and 24th for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Extended Hours
Extended hours are available for voter registration and absentee voting in the Black Hawk County Election Office. In addition to regular hours of Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, extended office hours will be as follows:
Monday, November 20 - 8am to 5pm
Friday, December 1 - 8am to 5pm
Election Day
Tuesday, December 5 - Election Day; Polls are open from 7am to 8 pm. The Election Office will be open for general voter inquiries, however on election day voters can no longer vote at the Election Office; they must vote at their designated polling place.
