Precinct Election Official Overview
Being a Precinct Election Official requires a full-day commitment—from 6:00 AM to around 9:00 PM. Split shifts are not offered. You must remain at the polling site all day, though short breaks are allowed. Bring any food, medications, or items you may need, or arrange to have them delivered. If you're assigned to work at a polling location other than your own, be sure to vote early or request an absentee ballot in advance.
Roles & Responsibilities
Precinct Chairperson
- Oversees polling site operations
- Supervises the team and assign duties
- Verifies materials and equipment
- Picks up/returns supplies
Precinct Election Official (PEO)
- Follows directions of the Precinct Chairperson
- Checks in and registers voters
- Assists and provides directions to voters
- Sets up/tears down equipment at the precinct
- Completes reports
Training
Training is required for all roles. Hands-on training covers:
- Election laws & voter eligibility
- Polling site setup & equipment use
- Reporting results & paperwork
Pay
Flat-rate pay for the full Election Day (6 AM–9 PM).
- Chairperson: $250/day
- PEO: $200/day
- Mileage: $0.50 per mile
Qualifications
- Registered voter in Black Hawk County
- Not a candidate or close relative of one
- Available entire Election Day
- Agree to oath & confidentiality
- Basic tech skills + team mindset
When You May Serve
- City/School Elections: Nov (odd years)
- Primary Elections: June (even years)
- General Elections: Nov (even years)
- Special Elections: As needed
Polls open: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM
